Stop and Shop 8-31 thru 9-6
I always seem to remember on Friday that Stop and Shops sales ended the day before. More than likely I didn't get whatever was on my list for that week. So, I am trying something new. I headed to Couponmom.com and checked out what was on sale this week and what coupons go with it. Checking out the sales on a Friday at Stop and Shop. Maybe this way I will make it there with my coupons for the items before the sale ends. My CVS Shopping Trip
I went shopping today with coupons and saved 67% I feel like it has been a while since I bought something with coupons, so I made sure I did this today. Thanks to the couponing sites I check and a friend that posted on Facebook her savings on this same item, I checked my coupons to see which Dawn coupons I had. I had save $1.00 on 2. So, since I had multiple coupons I didn't get just two.
I saved with sales and coupons $8.64
Now for how much they cost
All eight of these only cost me $4.17 (3.92 + .25 tax).

Starbucks Drinkers
If you frequent Starbucks you might want to know this.....If you purchase any beverage from a Starbucks within a participating Target they stamp your receipt. The stamp allows you to come back in within 14 days to purchase any drink, any size for only $2 plus tax. You have to have the stamped receipt with you and show or give it to a participating Starbucks within Target's to get the discounted price. I took advantage of this yesterday and purchased a Venti Frappachino that goes for over $4. I only paid $2.13 plus they stamped my receipt so I can enjoy another tasty beverage within the 14 days for a great price. It pays to save those receipts!!!

Comparing, Newspapers, CVS 8/26-9/1
Last night I found myself comparing my couponing to a friends who also lives in CT. However, she lives close to the CT/MA border. I haven't asked if she does her couponing in CT or MA, but there is probably a good hour or more between where she lives and me. Today it has helped me to become more determined to organize my coupons and really search inside myself for the reason I got into using coupons in the first place. I always seem to play a catch up game with cutting my coupons. Now that I expanded which papers I buy I find myself with even more inserts.
Speaking of newspapers. Over the past few months I have been venturing out to purchase other papers on a Sunday. Depending on the value of the coupon I am searching for I will limit my search to papers that cost in that range. I tend to stay away from the $5 papers. I am finding that each paper I pick up and look at the inserts have some different coupons than the Connecticut Post I get delivered. Some inserts have the same coupon just a different value. While others have coupons that I would use, but that were not printed in the Connecticut Posts inserts.
Today I tried to get a subscription for the New Haven Register since that is one the papers I find has the coupons that are not in my Connecticut Post. They do not deliver to my area. So instead I have to go store to store looking for it on a Sunday if I want it.
Instead of getting frustrated because someone appears to be doing much better than you with their couponing take some things into consideration are they in your same town. Just because they are in the same state as you does not mean you are getting the exact same coupons. Coupons vary paper to paper and could vary per city or county in the same state.
Always keep in mind why YOU coupon. Don't get all wrapped up in what the Jane's and John's of this world are doing. Instead ask them questions, we all could learn something new. Remember the feeling you get when you see how much YOU saved. Be happy with your accomplishments, the people YOU help, the money YOU save.

Am I Really Doing All I Could
For the most part when I shop with coupons I only get four of an item. I don't normally get more of an item, but by not getting more than four am I really doing the most I could. Am I really maximizing my savings? I don't clear shelves and I don't have extravagant photos to show for my shopping.
For some reason my weekly routines have me at stores a lot in one week. I tend not to do one big shop, but pick the items up throughout the week. Seeing others pictures, hearing others savings stories, am I really doing good. I thought I was....
Maybe I shouldn't get hooked up on how many items I get, but how many people I have been able to bless with things from my shopping.
Have any of you learned anything from this blog? Have I inspired you to use coupons, use them more, etc?

Using a Gift Card Wisely
I have had a Toys R Us gift card in my wallet for a while now. It seems like every time we go I forget it is there. Not yesterday...I set out on a mission. The gift card only had $5 on it, but I planned on spending it wisely. Since Tuesday night in my house is family game night and I can't seem to find our set of domino's I headed to the game isle. I seemed to recall that they had a set for 4.99. Sure enough they did. After consulting with my son on how many domino's we should get we both decided on the $4.99 tin that contained 28 domino's. I briefly forgot there was tax on the item, so thought I was going to be walking out of there with free dominos. Wrong...I had to pay .31 cents. Still .31 cents is not bad.
So by using my gift card wisely, I managed to save 94% on something that could bring my family hours of entertainment.

Rite Aid Upcoming Up Reward Changes
I was very surprised to see that Rite Aid is changing their Up Rewards. I am torn with how I feel about these changes. If I have them loaded to my card instead of the paper version it is one less thing I have to file, but the downside is with the reward not in front of me will I be more likely to have it expire before I remember I have it.

Helping Others
When you shop with coupons who do you have in mind when you purchase the items or get them for free? There are times that I have my family in mind, other times I pick up things knowing that it is meant for a specific person, and sometimes I don't know who it is meant for yet. In the past few weeks I have seen dish soap, ketchup, pens, dental floss, deodorant, laundry detergent, and some other things go from my stockpile or "store" to four different households.
When I started to use coupons I really did not have a specific goal in mind. I still don't. I enjoy the rush I get when saving a lot. Disappointed at times when I don't save as much as I could have. Have a giving heart.
There are days that I find are so packed with other things that I don't have time to clip and organize my coupons. I don't give up just because time is not on my side. I think about how much I save both myself and others, the conversations I have with others about using coupons, teaching my son about savings, etc.
No matter what the reason you are using coupons, share your savings stories with others, you might be the lifeline they are looking for. You might have helped turn a bleak situation into hope. Some people don't know how to maximize their savings, teach them. Offer your tips, share your stockpile, share your stories.

Staples Teacher's Appreciation Day
Staples offers once a year a teacher's appreciation day. Where they give educators a free thank you bag filled with goodies and coupons. For my state this event happens this coming Saturday 8/18 from 9-12. Last year I went and received a handy red tote, pens, notebook, pencils, glue sticks, sticky notepad, and more...Here is a link to the event http://www.staples.com/sbd/cre/marketing/tad/index.html You can click on the link to find out when the event occurs in your state. Keep in mind It does say it is limited to the first 100 teachers that go so I would plan on going earlier rather than later. I did bring my CHALK membership card last year, but don't recall having to show it at all.
Never Gets Old and Flash Drive Deal
Last week I did some shopping at Target. Since it is a store I frequent often I went a few times last week to get scotch tape and papermate pens. Both were free after coupons. Some cashiers just looked at the register like they have never seen a $0 total. While one gentleman after ringing up my pack of pens, roll of scotch tape and taking off my coupons said something like, "that's a good deal." Impressing not only myself, but a cashier with my savings never seems to get old since everyone's reactions are different.
I have been looking at the sales ads and have seen flash drives on sale at just about every store. I knew I needed to pick at least one up for this coming schoolyear, but wasn't sure how many gigabytes I wanted. While at BJ's today I noticed they too have flash drives for a great price. A 2 pack of 4 GB PNY Flash Drives for $9.99 (originally 14.99) or a single 8 GB PNY Flash Drive for $6.99. I hesitated as to which one was a better deal for what I needed and ended up picking up the 8 GB.

Binder vs Coupon Box
Have you ever had the feeling that you had a certain coupon, but you couldn't find it flipping through your coupon box in the store? Do you think that if you break your coupon box into many categories it might be easier to find the coupons when you are looking for them? I have been there, missed coupons, had coupons stick together, took forever to find. When watching "Extreme Couponing" I noticed a common thing from show to show. Everyone had coupon binders. Hmm....interesting....I was hesitant about moving from a coupon box to a binder. How would I organize it? What would happen if I had a coupon that went before others already filed? Was I going to be spending a lot in baseball card sheets? Was it going to be more work then it was worth? Finally I gave in, found a binder that was on clearance for under a dollar and price compared baseball card sheets, and purchased packs of dividers to separate my sections. Found the best deal for my money at Target for my sheets and dividers.
The hardest part was coming up with the categories. I wasn't sure how I wanted to break my coupons into categories. Here are the categories that I currently have in my binder:

I add categories or split categories up as needed. Sometimes I run across a coupon that might not fit in any of those categories. In these cases I might keep it in the front pouch of my binder or pick it in a category that is similar to the coupon item.
Within these categories I have the coupons alphabetical. Sometimes if I am adding a few coupons that go in the middle of a current page I might stick a blank sheet before or after the page and shift the coupons over.
Since the coupons come in many different shapes and sizes there are often times I have to fold a coupon in halves or thirds before inserting into the coupon sleeve.
The sheets make it easier to go through and clean out the expired coupons, find a coupon, store multiple of the same coupon, and keep everything together. Yes a binder is bigger to carry instead of a compact coupon box, but the time it cuts down on finding the coupon you are looking for is well worth it.
